Virgin Media's gigabit broadband is available to 11,000 more homes in Huddersfield for the first time.
Full fibre broadband with download speeds of up to 2Gbps is now available through Virgin Media in Huddersfield.
11,000 additional homes have been connected by Nexfibre, a joint venture between the parent companies of Virgin Media and O2.
Nexfibre plans to connect a total of 5 million additional homes to Virgin Media broadband by the end of 2026.
Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, already has a large amount of Virgin Media coverage in the town, with most properties connected to their existing coaxial cable network.
The new build by Nexfibre has connected more than 11,000 properties previously without Virgin Media broadband in the area to a full fibre service.
This includes Milnsbridge, Golcar, and Longwood in the west of Huddersfield, as well as properties in and around Holmfirth, just south of the town, and nearby villages including Shepley, Skelmanthorpe, Shelley, Clayton West, Emley, Denby Dale and Upper Denby.
Newly connected homes can now order up to 2Gbps Virgin Media broadband, as well as access symmetrical speeds and Virgin's Stream TV service.
Cheaper plans are also available of course, with Virgin Media's entry-level M125 Fibre Broadband plan currently costing just £24 per month, making it one of the UK's cheapest broadband deals right now.
Julie Agnew, Managing Director of Fixed Network Expansion at Virgin Media O2 said, "11,000 more homes in Huddersfield can now feel the benefit of Virgin Media's services - with packages that include everything from next generation multigigabit broadband to easy-to-use TV streaming and entertainment services.
"These ultrareliable full fibre to the home broadband connections come with speeds - up to 21 times faster than local average - providing total peace of mind that whatever you're doing online, you'll never be slowed down by your service."
As we've mentioned, most of Huddersfield already has access to Virgin Media, with Nexfibre plugging some gaps in the town that were previously missed out.
Yet, some - but not all - newly connected residents of Huddersfield already had full fibre access through Openreach and CityFibre.
Properties in Milnsbridge are covered by both CityFibre and Openreach full fibre networks, while Openreach also covers homes in Longwood and Golcar.
Parts of Holmfirth, Shepley, Shelley, Emley, and Upper Cumberworth, are also passed by Openreach full fibre, while those living in Skelmanthorpe, Clayton West, Denby Dale and Lower Cumberworth, will see greater benefit from Nexfibre's roll out, being able to access full fibre broadband for the first time.
Openreach full fibre now delivers speeds up to 1.6Gbps through resellers including Vodafone, while CityFibre offers up to 2.2Gbps through Vodafone as well. Other resellers of Openreach full fibre to the home include BT, Sky, Plusnet, TalkTalk, and NOW Broadband.
Of course, residents with the choice of two or more providers also benefit from greater choice, as well as additional services, like Virgin Media Stream TV, which is exclusively available to their broadband customers.
Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet member for finance and regeneration at Kirklees Council said, "This is a huge step forward for our digital connectivity. Over the last few years, we know more people than ever before are working from home, gaming online and using streaming services every day. As we all conduct more of our lives online, digital connectivity becomes a crucial part of the infrastructure to support our modern lives.
"That's why we're currently investing in digital connectivity, for years we have been committed to making Kirklees one of the most digitally connected councils and will continue to work with organisations like Virgin Media, to increase high speed digital connectivity and bring better broadband to more people who live and work in the district. With this latest work, 11,000 more people in Huddersfield can now benefit from fibre broadband - which could be up to twenty-one times faster than the current local average.
"This is fantastic news, and our work as a council is far from done - we're going to continue working with digital infrastructure providers to bring gigabit speeds to more people across Kirklees in the near future."
